Author/Producer of The Butler to Speak at BASIS Independent McLean, Mar. 10

Wil Haygood, author and associate producer of the blockbuster film, The Butler, will present at BASIS Independent McLean on Fri., Mar. 10 from 6:30 pm to 8 p.m., to talk about writing and how his work launched him onto the world stage. The event is free and open to public, located at 8000 Jones Branch Drive in McLean, Va. Haygood will also be available for a book signing, as his two books will be available for sale; The Butler and his latest book, Showdown, which chronicles the battle of the Supreme Court nomination of Thurgood Marshall. Vienna Student Learns Hands-On Teaching at BASIS Independent;Tysons Chamber Job Shadow Program

Angie Soler, a senior at James Madison High School of Vienna, Va., got hands-on teaching skills when job shadowing BASIS Independent McLean’s kindergarten teacher, Danielle Sarver. Soler is part of the 5th Annual Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce (TRCC) job shadow program, which includes 50 11th and 12th grade students of Oakton, James Madison, Marshall Academy and George C. Marshall high schools in Fairfax County, Va. Maureen Loftus, executive director of LearningRx of Vienna, Va., and Reston, Va. is heading up the program as she is the chair of the TRCC’s Youth and Education Committee. BASIS Independent McLean Elects Its New Mascot by Student-Designed Election Process

BASIS Independent McLean started its inaugural year this fall in McLean, Va., Tysons Corner’s first k-12 school, and quickly went to work on the election process to vote in their first school mascot, the BASIS Independent McLean Bobcats. The student-designed electoral process, led by BASIS Independent McLean ninth grader, Rohit Narayanan, mimicked a voting system similar to the United States, and provided a learning tool for students to understand the electoral process during the recent presidential election. LearningRx Of Vienna/Reston, VA. Leads 5th Annual, Award-Winning Job Shadow Program

Maureen Loftus, executive director of LearningRx of Vienna, Va., and Reston, Va. is leading the fifth annual Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce (TRCC) job shadow program for 50 11th and 12th grade students of Oakton, James Madison and, Marshall Academy and George C. Marshall high schools in Fairfax County, Va. Students can shadow professionals in more than 30 industries for one day in January or February. The program received a Blue Ribbon Award for Workforce Development from Fairfax County Schools in 2014. Metropolitan School of the Arts – Breakfast with Santa at Hotel Monaco

Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) of Alexandria, Va. will host their annual Breakfast with Santa on Sun., Dec. 18 at 9:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. at the Hotel Monaco, 480 King Street in Old Town Alexandria. Tickets range in price from $35 to $45 per person. All tickets can be purchased online at www.metropolitanarts.org.

Performers will join Santa for the annual Breakfast with Santa. The family-event offers Sunday brunch at the Hotel Monaco in Old Town Alexandria, complete with a live performance from Metropolitan School of the Arts’ dancers and visits from Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Suzy Snowflake and her International Dolls.

“Breakfast with Santa combines the magic of Christmas with festive dance performances and favorite holiday characters, perfect for the whole family to enjoy,” said Melissa Dobbs, executive director and founder of Metropolitan School of the Arts of Alexandria, Va.

Metropolitan School of the Arts Features the Nutcracker

Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) of Alexandria, Va. will present their annual Nutcracker performances on Fri., Dec. 2 at 7 p.m., and Sat., Dec. 3 at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.at the Northern Virginia Community College, Ernst Cultural Center at the Annandale Campus at 8333 Little River Turnpike. Ticket prices range from $26.50 to $30 and can be purchased online at www.metropolitanarts.org.

Audiences will join Clara and her Nutcracker in a magical journey from her Victorian home through the Land of Snow and into the Land of Sweets. The performance features a larger-than-life Christmas tree, more than 100 dancers, and Tchaikovsky’s glorious score.
