BASIS.ed’s co-founder Dr. Michael Block will speak at a free, public information session on Wed., May 24 at BASIS Independent McLean at 6:15 p.m., located at 8000 Jones Branch Drive in McLean, Va. to discuss U.S. News & World Report’s Best High School Rankings that has listed five of the 10 schools as BASIS.ed – at first, second, third, fifth and seventh place. The public is invited to hear Dr. Block talk about the notable school curriculum that led to BASIS.ed’s reputable U.S. rankings.  “Swimming pools will be opening soon, and so many kids go without proper swimsuits,” said Alice Pires, owner of Carmello’s and Monza of Historic Manassas, Va. “CASA is a tremendous support for kids in need of support, guidance and love, and we love the opportunity to be able to give back,” said Pires.

More than 130 attendees joined the event, including Jay Pearson, executive principal, Region 2, Fairfax County Public Schools and Maureen Loftus, youth and education chair for the Tysons Regional Chamber of Commerce. Each year, the Tysons Regional Chamber partners with area schools to celebrate and honor selected students who deserve recognition for positive potential or significant improvements. The Chamber Stars event celebrates the accomplishment of students who have persevered despite significant obstacles or personal struggles.

The winners of the Cook in Tuscany culinary tours will be able treat themselves in the Tuscan lifestyle and discover the region’s passion for food and fun. The tour provides daily cooking lessons from local “Nonnas”, first class accommodations in the medieval hill-top village of Montefollonico, visits to regional wineries and cheese makers, tours of local and historic sites and many recreational activities.

“It’s our honor to be able to support Comfort Cases, we hope that our auction items can help provide hundreds of backpacks for foster care kids,” said Linda Meyers, co-owner of Cook in Tuscany.

BASIS Independent McLean Earns First Place at  34th Annual Northern Virginia Regional MATHCOUNTS Com

For the first time in almost 30 years, the 34th Annual Northern Virginia Regional MATHCOUNTS Competition awarded first place to a new math champion: BASIS Independent McLean (BIM) of McLean, Va., which opened in 2016. BIM’s middle school math team placed first among schools in the Northern Virginia Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition (comprised of 17 schools). Longfellow Middle School of Falls Church, Va., who has historically earned the first place award since the 1980s, came in second place.
